Shedding and Breakage....Which Is It?

So I am still in the protective mode....

Today I took out my updo and washed and deep conditioned my hair.  I will air dry and twist again tomorrow.  One thing I dont like about twisting my hair is the tangles that I get...I am still perfecting my ability to take my time and CAREFULLY take down twists. I find that I get alot of breakage when I am removing twists.  Im sure this is not at all as bad as what I am thinking but any breakage is BAD during a growth challenge.

I can say my hair remained moisturized and conditioned...it was not dry and brittle when I took the twists down which was an awesome thing!

From now on...I will stick to larger twist instead of small ones which are really hard to loosen and easily gets tangled.

I did wash with a new shampoo which I LOVE!

Its from U R Curly called Soya Shampoo
Its a great complement for the Morning Mint Masque which I am deep conditioning with RIGHT NOW! The shampoo has soy protein, tea tree oil and abyssinian oil and provides a great tingle.  It makes my hair feel like SILKY GOODNESS!  The smell is heavenly...I love it!

Hopefully the hairs I lost was more shedding than breakage....(I didnt notice too many white bulbs....eek!) and when I measure my hair in July I will see some improvement!  I PRAY!

Im really trying! :)

Here's the next style I am trying...

Protective Style #1

So I really wanted to get kinky twists because they look so beautiful...but reality hit and I know that they never last more than two days in my head (well may be 2-3 weeks) and I dont get the full benefit of them.  I saw some pics of people who have twisted their own hair and did some awesome things with it and I decided to give it a shot.  I mean I have a decent amount of hair it should work!

So I attempted to do an updo and I think it came out pretty good....its modeled after FusionofCultures on youtube I put one of her videos in my last entry about flat twisting.  I am not that good and the flat twisting but I am am better than I was before...I have a hard time getting them to be tight. All and all I think I did a good job!

YAY ME! I will try to keep this in all week and then I will probably wear my hair down to wash it and back up it will go...

How do you style your hair during its protective seasons?

Hair Growth: Protective Styling

So I am not sure if my hair has grown at all during my little challenge!  It does seems thicker, less hair is trapped in my combs and brushes and definitely more moisturized...I haven't measured again yet...that isn't due until July.  I am still using MTG and covering my hair and that has served its purpose...I will continue to do that!  Next phase is protective styling!  I am not one for true protective styling because I like my hair to be FREE so I can play with it!  BUT I've seen the proof....protective styling is very important for length retention! So I must try it...

Starting next week (sometime after 6/2) I will be doing protective styles ONLY for one month straight!  YES! ONE WHOLE MONTH!  I want to do kinky twists....but I am not that good.  I will see how it goes!  I am not looking up protective styles so I can try them out and get this thing GOING!  I will take down for my deep conditions....then right back up they will go!

I will play my deep conditions by ear.....when my hair is looking broke, busted and disgusted I will refresh it with a nice conditioner!

This method will minimize combing, finger play and brushing which will minimize BREAKAGE!

I found a great video that teaches me how to do the style above....
Why not give it a try!

Hair Stats

So I am so not good at taking those pictures checking length and I never feel like its consistent because of the way I hold my head and other factors.  Instead of doing that I just got out the measuring tape and decided to measure my hair in various places.  So I have the average from the front, my crown and the back.

I am getting pretty good at my twist outs too! I will post pictures below. I have never had a twist out last more than one day...I went three!  I've learned that using conditioner with silicone ingredients helped because it reduced friction between strands which reduced frizz!  I am attempting a Bantu Knot out tonight on my stretched hair...exciting!

Here are my stats:

Front: 11 inches

Crown: 10 inches

Back: 9 inches

I will take the inches in about three months (July 3rd) and see how I am doing.  I am still using MTG as a growth aid once a week. I am deep conditioning once a month at least, I will do more than that if I feel necessary.  My hair has been unbelievably moisturized because of my consistency in moisturizing properly and covering my hair with a satin scarf or bonnet.  I moisturize using Morning Dew Hair Products. (www.morningdewhair.com)

The best twist out EVER! :)

Day 2...

Twist and SHOUT!!!!

Hair was deep conditioned and detangled using the Morning Mint Masque...hair was moisturized and sealed using Mango Coconut Sunshine and a personal mix of essential oils. Eco Styler Gel was used to slick down edges and hair was doubled strand twisted overnight :)
Cue the music....
I am really conquering my twist out woes...YAY!

As you can see Im getting good...

This style was inspired by my new favorite youtuber/blogger MahoganyKnots!  I am in love with her hair!!!

We don't have the same texture but its close enough...LOL!

I'm learning that twist outs are more involved than I thought.  Its all about technique....

I've begun to flat twist my hair especially in the front to get more definition...I will post a video that shows you what I mean by flat twisting.

I've also noticed that to keep the definition of your twist out it requires little to NO manipulation once twists are taken out (at least for my hair).  If I pull the curls too much it will transition to a big poofy mess of tresses.  Once I unravel I usually leave it alone, my hair will plump up given me the big hair I desire.  It just takes a little time.

Ive started to do more twist/braid outs when my hair is already dry as well.  I do mist my hair with my master mix because I like the way it looks better when the style is "set".  The reason for this is my hair rarely dries overnight...as a matter of fact it NEVER dries overnight.  If my hair isnt fully dry...it also leads to the frizz puff...no bueno!

I love it!

For my growth challenge, Ive also decided to not apply any more color to my hair :(
For a season...Ive grown really close to my red/blonde hair...but Im going back to black for a while....since it needs to grow out....I still have more time to be a red head. Once I reach my goal....IM COLORING AGAIN!!! Probably immediately....lol!

Im running out of MTG...Im thinking of making my own concoction, the ingredients are pretty simple...I will keep you posted on that.  Just have to find the sulfer...which is the most important part.  We'll See....

Im Getting Good...

So I have been battling with conquering the braid out as well as my growth challenge.  I haven't really seen any change in my length because it hasn't been long enough to expect to see a change.

I am in fact getting good at braid outs.  As you can see I was able to get results worth busting out the camera for!  YES! Success!

Its nice to have something different than my typical wash n go's each day.  Its also nice not to have my hair dripping wet every single day...but as the weather gets hotter I may be returning back to my wet roots (literally).

As far as my growth challenge, Ive been applying MTG to my scalp once a week and massage it well into my scalp.  I also have been wearing protective styles more often like buns and pin ups in addition to my braid outs.  I plan to incorporate more "babying" to my ends each night before retiring to ensure that I retain them.  My ends tend to be very dry, not necessarily split or damaged just rough to the touch.  I will do a light dusting this evening with my shears (its IMPORTANT to have good shears for your ends).  I spotted some stray split ends (which is very normal)  but I need to get rid of them ASAP!  I will check my length at the end of each month.  I use the tattoo on my back as an indicator lol....I want my hair to ultimately be at the end of the tail of my hummingbird...that would be a bit past APL approaching BSL (stretched not straightened)

To achieve this style I separated my hair in about 10-12 sections lightly misted my hair with my master moisture mix (water, aloe vera juice, peppermint oil and lavender oil), sealed in with a small amount of Mango Coconut Sunshine (available at www.morningdewhair.com) and braided each section.  Once each section is braided I rolled each braid with a flexi rod (5/8 inch) and covered my hair with a satin bonnet for the night.

Twist, Braid or Bantu?

Ive been natural for over five years and I still have not master the "outs".  What do I mean...

Braid outs
Twist outs
Bantu Knot outs...I havent even tried this!

It seems as if every time I try...it comes out like something else.  Then I have to  be creative and try and make it look cute...and everyone loves it! Little do they know the FRUSTRATION and AGGRAVATION that goes into perfecting these techniques..

I do know that my favorite "out" is the BRAID OUT!  I get the best stretch and "definition" when compared to my twist outs which seem to shrink into something rather scary...

This is why I tend to stick to the safety of a wash n go...which leaves me in a rut or a routine!

I am so determined to get it right...or is what Im getting just all that there is.  Sometimes I think am expecting something that my hair just cant do...maybe my curl pattern is just stubborn and wont do certain things!  I love my hair texture I wouldnt trade it for the world...just need to know its limitations.

I cant imagine natural hair having limitations...so trial and error will be my teacher.

I am going to master at least one of these techniques THIS SUMMER!

My choice is the BRAID OUT!

I will "plait" my hair most nights to not only set it to style but to protect my ends as well. I will do this throughout the summer of 2012.  Even the days I know I will wear a wash n go..I will still braid up so that my ends will be protected.  I have a tendency to not cover my hair up regularly which is BAD BAD BAD! I know better....I really do.  I will couple this with a grow challenge...using MTG! I know I know all the "toxins" and the warnings that others have reported.  Ive done my own research.

I need my hair to grow...so follow along!

Why I Hardly Ever Straighten....

So everyone wants me to straighten my hair.  I guess to see how long it really is or hairdressers that want my $ but dont have the skill set to do anything other than that....who knows.

See this picture?  That is magnified heat damaged hair.  No ma'am! I dont want my hair to look remotely like that.  Most of you call this "trained" hair....its not trained its DESTROYED!

I went natural to indulge and appreciate my natural curls and so that I wouldn't be scared to sweat.  No matter what your hairdresser tells you or what you saw on your favorite YouTube video...your texture does not return back to its original glory!  Have you ever seen someone whose hair looks partially natural and you are so confused about whether or not she has permed ends or not?  They probably are a victim of heat damage; this is even worse for those of us who have color in their hair.

For some women they want to loosen up their texture....so maybe this is cool for you or the ones of depend solely on straight hair...well I guess in that case it doesn't matter at all.

As for me and my tresses...we shall remain curly 99.9% of the time.

Ive seen it happen over and over...

I cant tell you what to do...but I can at least share with you why I do what I do.

Now dont get me wrong...I am not against straight hair...Its cool. I just dont want my hair to lose its pattern like Ive seen so many others...

There are some who say they can straighten without heat damage...I hope that they can.  Personally I think it only minimizes the damage/effects.  Its simple chemistry....excess heat applied to most substances can cause a chemical change...meaning covalent bonds have been broken.  Broken bonds...means new substance...which is irreversible.

I just cant risk it.

Once or twice a year....just to check length if that is all I can do.

Curly = Pretty?

So this is my hair...

I dont know what type it is....some say 3c others 4a...needless to say I DON'T CARE!

Lets just say that I hear a phrase along this line everyday....
"You have that pretty hair"OR my favorite "I would go natural if my hair was like yours"

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN!?! So because my hair is curly...it makes it pretty as opposed to her hair?

This is from people of color mind you...

When are we going to just embrace who we are as a people?   What exactly makes my hair "good" and another person's bad?  If your assumption (which is the lowest form of knowledge mind you) is that my hair or curly hair in general is EASIER to maintain...you couldn't be more wrong! It takes just as much maintenance and care to take care of curly hair (if not more) than those who have a more coarse texture of hair. We have to moisturize, trim, cover and pray over our tresses just like the next chick!

There is something to appreciate about each woman's texture...
That is the one thing that I enjoy about natural hair...I can look at different people and see how their hair can do things that mine cant and appreciate that.  ITS FUN!

I guess the moral of the story is that you should just love what you have.
If you are caught up in texture that bad...you might as well go on and perm your hair now.....
To all my natural ladies out there that lust after curly tresses...STOP!  Your hair is gorgeous the way it is...its OK!  You dont have to convince me or anyone that your hair is really curly but "something" happened that we never see those curls.  DO YOU BABY!

Love Your Natural TODAY!

MY HAIR DOESN'T DO THIS!!! I'm not mad though....I just admire...and remember that my hair is hawt the way God made it....

Reboot Side Effect HAIR GROWTH!!!

YAY! So I woke this morning and had a pleasant surprise!  My afro is looking AMAZING! The color of my hair looks richer and its definitely fuller.  I am usually the last to know my hair is growing but I know without a shadow of a doubt that it is!

Im sure my Morning Dew Products have something to do with it too! [Make sure you check out Morning Dew; roll over the Natural Hair tab on the top of this page!].  Its not hard to believe that this reboot has boosted my hair growth.  All the vitamins and nutrients my body is receiving are really beneficial for the hair.

Eating a diet with plenty of fruits and veggies will boost up your antioxidant intake which will increase your blood circulation....more blood to your scalp = increased hair growth!  Vitamins such as A and C promote scalp health and help with the circulation piece!  They also can help your body produce more sebum...what is that? Sebum is the oily substance your hair follicles produce; its our natural hair conditioner!  My motto is moisturized hair is healthy hair!  Healthy hair grows!

Im so excited about this...I may even straighten my hair for a length check...possibly for my birthday!  I dont like straight hair so that is a big MAYBE!

Vision Unfolds Part I: Introducing Morning Dew Hair Products

Everyone has dreams rights?  Sad thing is most people just leave those aspirations floating around in their minds.  I used to be one of those people...no longer!  I have made the decision to do what I want to do with these great ideas that are in my mind.  I dont believe fully in coincidence, I know there is a God who leads those that allow Him to, and when he leads...success is inevitable! How do I know?  I'm glad you asked...

I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions Proverbs 8:12
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Joshua 1:8
God never promised us that He would make us successful but he promised that if we obey his commandments that we will MAKE OUR WAY successful and prosperous.  O yes you have to do the work!

I never saw myself as a business owner, I didn't see myself as creative or with a skill set to do anything in that vein.  I'm a science nerd....I mean what could I do?  To me at that time, it just didn't seem feasible, I was too left brained for that.  I got over that notion after just allowing myself to ponder the possibility of something more in my life than my original plan.  If I have access to infinite wisdom....why not tap in?  So I began to vision cast....you should try it.  ITS FREE!

You would be surprised at what your mind can download when just THINK! Ideas began to flow to me like a waterfall! I saw how I could use my love for science and my other random interests to create a business.  My plan is rather vast but the first branch is a HAIR CARE LINE! I can use my scientific expertise and my obsession with hair to come up with something wonderful....and I DID!  Thus Morning Dew Hair Products
was born!  I am launching my very first product; Mango Coconut Sunshine!  I'm so excited...Ive been allowing people locally to try it out and its creating a buzz!  This is the first of many ventures...

So what exactly are you waiting for?  There's greatness inside of you if you would just reach down in there and pull it out....I believe in you!  I will support a vision in a minute!  Let me know if you need help...I'm here for you!  Lets do this! First step is to dream it up...

Look out for my Hair Meetup!  Not just natural hair but HAIR in general...its time for all of us to have healthy hair and not be separate...we can learn from each other. Relaxed or natural...its hair and should be taken care of!

If you are interested in trying out my product here is a link to my order form (payment is not required to order, I will contact you to discuss shipping if you are not local)

Yellow Teeth...BE GONE!

Ever talk to someone and they have outstanding teeth...isn't that refreshing!?! There is something endearing about a beautiful smile regardless of what they look like otherwise (chuckle, chuckle).  Well I would consider myself to have beautiful teeth (gap and all...I actually love my gap it has personality).  I like for them to be as white  and smooth as possible! The thought of having brown teeth is FRIGHTENING!

So how do you keep your teeth white? BRUSH THEM! DUH! Not only that...you have to be careful with the types of things you eat...coffee definitely will stain your pearly whites as well as tea (tear...), red wine, cranberry juice, cola, blueberries, curry and even soy sauce.  The list goes on and on....

We all have a liking to at least one of these things....so we will need some help. Crest has come out with a toothpaste that only God could inspire.  Its called 3D White!  I love it!  After one use...I noticed a considerable difference! I still use salt once a week (see my earlier entry on using salt on your teeth).   Ive been smiling ever since.  To ice the cake, one of my students said to me WOW you have the prettiest white teeth Miss...well its official! I'm a fan and a loyal customer for sure!  I would recommend this product!

Wondering how it works well its simple...
The paste contains sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) that disrupts the stains pellicle (the thin layer of stain on your tooth enamel)...once it is broken...the abrasion from you brushing will remove it from your teeth.  This has to be something done on a regular basis to have true results....but we all brush daily right?  RIGHT!  The paste also polishes the enamel to give you a nice bright and shiny smile!

In conclusion....BUY THIS TOOTHPASTE!  I give it 5 stars, 2 thumbs up!
It was on sale at Wal-Mart recently in my area too....a 2 pack!

Till Next Time

Smiling Brightly :)

TWA: You have to maintain it ladies!

So you went natural?  Cool! That's a big deal....congrats! Welcome to the cool kids table...lol (I kid...I joke, relaxed girls can sit too).   So now what do you do with this Teeny Weeny Afro affectionately known as a TWA? No worries your hair will most likely grow out quickly and you wont have TWA for long unless you want to. There are some things you will need to know and even more things you will have to do.  Whether you are relaxed or natural, healthy African American hair takes WORK especially if you are working from the house.  Some of us prefer it that way (like myself), others will lean on salons and that's cool too!

First...EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERENT HAIR TEXTURE! You may not be able to do the same thing as the next lady...you will have to accept that precious. Know your hair texture, find someone who has similar hair like you and go from there.  There will be trial and error honey!
Also understand that you will have to PURCHASE quality products...no more cheap mineral oil filled products (holla at me...I make an awesome moisturizer for a great price). Learn to read labels, if your see mineral oil as the first or second ingredient....PUT IT DOWN! It will leave you hair dry and ashy looking...no bueno!
      • Invest in some good gel as well...I prefer Eco Styler but there are others as well...
Your TWA needs to be shaped and not raggedy looking....if you dont have defined curls...its OK! Everyone does not have curly hair...YOUR texture is BEAUTIFUL! If you like the curly look...do a twist/braid out (twist or braid hair while wet and let dry...when you unravel your hair will have "curl") You just have to find your niche....dont follow a beauty standard or try to be someone else...CREATE YOUR OWN!
You will have to pay more attention to your FACE! Something about a TWA brings attention to and brings out your face.  Its a good thing...we often hide behind our hair and dont pay enough attention to our faces.  So skin care and makeup will have to be a investment you should pursue.  Drink your water and take your vitamins (it helps your hair grow too)!  Also keep your eyebrows done.....its important; Im currently teaching myself how to arch my eyebrows at home for those emergency situations when you cant get to a salon...I believe its a good skill to have...
A good collection of earrings is also a staple for us natural girls, that's if you rock earrings....Afros and fabulous earrings are just a good combo :)
You must DIVORCE YOURSELF FROM THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS. Your biggest haters will be other black folk. They will frown, call you nappy headed among other things...WHO CARES!  Some dont realize how rude and offensive they can be...love them where they are.  If you are trying impress someone....you might as well get a perm now...
YOUTUBE IS YOUR FRIEND....WATCH IT! So many great videos on hair maintenance for all types of textures....

Here are some videos that may help you out....

Enjoy your fro...dont let it be a waiting room for when your hair grows out....do it big now!
If you any questions...let me know...Im here for you!

Till Next Time....

My Journey to Find Essential and Pure Products in Gainesville

Everyone that knows me knows I LOVE MY HAIR! I cherish it...I keep it healthy because its my crown...
This passion leads me to search for the best products to use...its not always easy let me tell you.
Hence...my passion to create my own! :)

Dont plan on reading any of my recipes...this is something that will be for purchase...stay tuned!

Well in order to make awesome natural products, you need awesome natural ingredients!  So I sought out on a journey to find where all the natural goodness was in Gainesville.  Now Gainesville is not a metropolis (yet....) where you can find rare goodness in cute little shops with interesting people on every corner.  Now being from metro NY, anything I could think of was just a train ride away...I digress.

So after hours of search I found some interesting places and I mean HOURS....

When your purchasing oils....make sure you buy ESSENTIAL OILS that are in a pure form....
Best way to know if its pure....read ingredients....there should only be ONE!
Also look for terms like ESSENTIAL, PURE, 100%, ORGANIC or VIRGIN

They tend to be pricey...but you get what you pay for my friends :)

These are some places that have great products if you are like me and dont like shopping online all the time...

Ward's: This is not only a great place to buy groceries but they have an amazing natural/organic section...who knew?

We dont have Whole Foods here so Mother Earth is our next best bet....they have two locations and their staff is AWESOME! I like them....

Otter and Trout Trading....this is downtown and hard to find (its next to Reggae Shack) they have some interesting stuff most I wont mess with but they do have essential oils and butters...even wholesale size!

I hope this is a help to you...these places also specialize in organic foods and just all around healthy living.   Have fun, learn about some new stuff.....this is how you enjoy life!

You never know you may get a witty idea while you are searching...

Do Something With Your Hair!

Ive experienced many great moments in life...from financial gain to educational pursuits. So many accomplishments but to be honest one of my favorite moments in life was the day I decided to go natural.  Seriously.  Whats the big deal?  Its just hair...nappy hair at that.  Well when I went natural a few things happened.  I saved money (LOL!), I did what I wanted to do and most importantly I was set apart from everyone else.  It caused me to stand out...something I have always wanted to do.  It made me different and though it isn't the only thing that defines me as the awesome woman I am, its a big part of who I am.  I made the statement that "I create my own trends and I wont be bottled into society' s beauty standard" #POW!  Now I look around and I am not so alone...everyone and their mama is natural...I love it! Finally, others have caught on!

The best thing to me about hair and especially natural hair is that it is VERSATILE! Now that isnt a message that has caught on just yet.  I wanna encourage you natural girls to DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR HAIR! That puff is not enough....

Do you know there is more to natural hair than an afro...
Switch it up sometimes....I love to see girls wear up-dos, twist outs, fro-hawks, rod sets or a simple bun.  YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL! Its your world! Lets show the rest of the world that our natural can not only be trendy but professional as well.  Depending on your profession....your huge fro may not be appropriate...dont give natural a wack name :).

Here's some of my favorites....

Is she natural? YES!  Flat irons can be our friends....

A simple up-do....super cute! One of my favorite styles!
Basic Fro...hair was stretched with a twist out :)
I dont know who this woman is...but this style is HOT!  I am so tempted to cut my hair for this :)

Dont know her either...but this is a MUST HAVE! This is super hot!

Im not saying dont wear a puff ever again...Im just saying switch it up sometimes...have fun with it!

Dont really know what to do....its OK!  Natural hair stylists are becoming more popular everyday! If you are one determined to be a home stylist like myself....check out youtube...it is a paradise for how to videos.  Just type in "natural hair" and you will be occupied all night long....literally.  I may even post some....you never know.  Also check out the links on my home page under natural hair....some really useful links!

Hope this helps...dont forget to comment and subscribe!

Why Am I Doing This?

So at some point in your life when you are making life changes, you have to ask yourself....WHY AM I DOING THIS?  When it comes to weight loss there are various reasons from various people. Some want to just look better, others want to for their health or to lessen the pain from backaches and such.  Regardless of the reasons, you have to look at yourself NOW and make sure you like who you are.  Sure you may want to change your size or a certain part of your body BUT you have like yourself. TODAY!  Not a false identity that many overweight people have (that usually causes them to make a fool of themselves)  but a confidence that comes from within.

I want to lose weight.  I cant wear the things I want to with ease.  It makes me upset! Yes this is all true.  Yet when I look the the mirror I dont cry, I dont hate myself; I actually really like what I see.  I just know I can look better.  I dont settle for the fact that society just wont accept me right now because of myself size....HMPH! Puhleeeze! I deserve top notch treatment now  and I will get it! I do not just decide to look a mess 100% of the time (Im working on that 5% of the time that I do let it go) because I am not there yet.  I am there! In my mind I am everything I dream to be...that is why I can smile in the midst of stagnant weeks and bloating or a mishap with my self control.  I know no matter what the outcome....I WIN!

Besides that, I am actually a great person.  I wont limit myself to the outside.  That would not be fair.  I take evaluation of the total person.  The love I have for others, the passion I have for God and the heart to be excellent in everything I do.  That is really who I am!  I will be that whether I am 150lb or if I am 3000lb.

I encourage you all that read this [I know you're out there because the counter keeps increasing..comment and follow...will ya!] to not limit yourself but see yourself in the future.  Dont let your outside be the determining factor to your self esteemIts not.  There is more to you.  If you dont, you most likely wont be happy when you reach your goal and if you are your self esteem is built on a shaky foundation.

Whats your foundation built on....
What someone told you?  What you think?  Sometimes either of these can be faulty...check out Psalms 139:14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
   your works are wonderful,
   I know that full well.
So the creator of the world, the most wise one made me and all his works are good?  Well that settles it for me.  I dont need another opinion.

Repeat "I LOVE ME"!
Guess what....I love you too!

Till Next Time....
So Happy Being Me :)
